(VOVWORLD) - The recent US peace proposal could in principle serve as a basis for a final peace settlement in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call on Monday, according to the Kremlin.

Erdogan expressed his intention of advancing the negotiation process in every possible way, and his willingness to keep Istanbul available as a platform for future negotiations, the Kremlin said.

The Speaker of Ukraine’s Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk on Monday reiterated Kyiv’s “red lines” for peace. He said Ukraine will not accept any territorial changes or limits on its armed forces, and that joining the EU and NATO must be included in future security guarantees. He added that the US proposal does not meet these conditions.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot described talks held in Geneva with the US about Ukraine as “constructive and useful”. President of the European Council Antonio Costa said there is a new momentum in peace negotiations although many issues remain unresolved. He said the EU will continue to provide military, financial, and diplomatic support to Ukraine.

Bloomberg reported that the US is currently resisting meeting the Ukrainians and Europeans together, but CBS News reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may visit the US this week to discuss US President Trump's bid to get an agreement on resolving the Ukraine conflict by Thanksgiving.
