On behalf of ABU Awards organizing board, VOV President Do Tien Sy gives the awards to the winners.

The ABU awards were initiated in 1964 to honor excellent radio and television work by members of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. This year VOV won an ABU News Reporting Award for a story called “Water for life” and an ABU Radio Special Jury Prize for a story called “Never give in”.

Journalist Hoang An, who works for the VOV1 radio channel, authored the “Water for life” story. He said he has travelled to many places, and the people of Hanoi, where he lives, don’t understand the problem some people have of needing to go a long distance to find water in the dry season, because Hanoi has not suffered a water shortage in a long time.  

“I used to work in the environmental sector. I know that Vietnam will run short of water, because Vietnam is not a country with abundant water resources. We decided to make a report on the situation in Dien Bien province. We did a lot of research and envisioned what I would see and write,” journalist An said.

VOV President presents the award to journalist Kieu Thanh Phuong, the author of “Never give in”.

Since 2004 VOV has submitted nearly 100 works to the ABU Awards and has won prizes in every category. VOV’s Vice President, Pham Manh Hung, said: “We have hosted ABU competitions, with a primary goal of improving the professionalism of VOV's reporters and editors. VOV has a contingent of young, dynamic journalists and senior experienced journalists. VOV wants to connect the older and younger journalists to exchange their professional perspectives. We have a consultancy board to select topics and oversee the production to ensure more engaging stories.”

A story called “Happiness of a great tiny man” produced by VOV2’s Culture-Society channel won a consolation prize in 2020. Other VOV stories that were  ABU Award finalists in 2021 were “Lucky stranded people” and “Stop or kill a river” .
