US to support Vietnam in climate change adaptation

(VOVworld) – Economic cooperation, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, is one of the focuses of an ongoing trip to Vietnam by the US Secretary of State John Kerry. On Monday, Kerry talked with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and met with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

On Sunday, Kerry toured Ngoc Hien district in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau where he talked about response to climate change.

He cited a prediction of scientists that the sea level may rise 1 meter by 2100. He pledged US support for Vietnam’s efforts in climate change adaptation through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the first of which will be a 17-million-USD project. Kerry also visited Duong Keo market in Tan An Tay commune where he lived during the Vietnam war.   

Kerry’s 4-day trip will conclude Tuesday.
