The entire town is illuminated by thousands of lanterns of many colors and forms and its beauty is dazzling when night falls. Marie, a French tourist said she really likes the lanterns there: “The decorative lanterns are very beautiful and we have a feeling that they are to welcome us. Although I have not seen all the streets, locals’ performances have impressed me a lot.”

Although the streets are packed with people, the atmosphere is not noisy. Tourists’ laughter and conversations and camera flash all create a lively space of timelessness and mystery.

Many tourists are interested with the funny sounds of toys for children for sale on pavements. Dang Thi Cuc is a vendor who sells toys that produce lights and sounds: “Children especially like humming tops. I make them from clay. First I put the clay inside a round mould and then I place paper on their body. I’ve been doing this for years and many tourists have come and bought my products.”

The music from one street corner has caught the attention of passersby. Do Van Bung is playing a Hawaii guitar and he has immersed himself in each of the notes. He said: “I have played 2 songs: Autumn night by Dang The Phong and Age of Sadness by Trinh Cong Son. This is the Hawaii guitar, which is very similar to ordinary guitar. It’s my habit to play here every full moon night.”

Two men are playing Chinese chess in silence without paying attention to onlookers. Their game and their relaxed faces have mesmerized a number of tourists. Tran Quyet Tien is the winner of the game: “After a working day, people love to take a stroll because of the fresh air at night. This is a good time to entertain and relax. We welcome anyone who wants to play.”

The full moon night has become familiar to locals and many tourists who love Hoi An. Nguyen Su, Secretary of Hoi An city’s party committee said the night is captivating with street sounds, lantern lights and the aroma of agarwood: “The aroma of agarwood at night is like an invisible bridge linking past and present and it makes people feel more relaxed and friendly. As a Hoi An citizen, I love to walk around at night to indulge in a feeling that I can’t describe with words.”

Anyone who has ever been to Hoi An has the same feeling that this place gives them peace of mind. Hoi An is beautiful as an ancient town by day and at night it becomes a space of serenity and mystery.
