In a story entitled “Trump, Kim optimistic over nuclear talks”, the French news agency AFP reviewed the first one-on-one meeting between US President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Kim Jong-un. It reported that the two leaders shook hands before a 20-minute conversation and then a dinner at a luxury hotel in Hanoi. Trump predicted a "very successful" summit and it would be equal or even better than the first time in Singapore. Leader Kim said a great outcome will be achieved this time that will be welcomed by all people," according to AFP.
In an article about the first meeting as part of the summit, the Xinhua News Agency of China quoted the DPRK leader as saying that there have been "a lot of efforts and patience" since their first meeting in Singapore. He expressed his hope that they could make fruitful achievements that many people are waiting for. Xinhua also quoted spokesperson of China's Foreign Ministry Lu Kang as saying on Wednesday that Beijing had been playing and would continue to play its role to achieve denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, and to achieve and safeguard lasting peace and stability of the peninsula and Northeast Asia.
The British news agency Reuters has also made constant updates about developments of the Hanoi summit, quoting the two leaders’ statements that expressed optimism about the success of the event.
AP, a news agency of the US, reported that the leaders of the nations with a long history of hostilities opened their second summit with smiles and friendly banter before sitting down for a dinner. It also noted their optimistic remarks about the event’s outcomes.
