Voting opens in Afghan presidential election

(VOVworld) – Polling began at 7 a.m. local time on Saturday, with Afghan voters deciding on a new president for the first democratic handover of power in the country's history since the collapse of the Taliban’s administration in 2001.

(VOVworld) – Polling began at 7 a.m. local time on Saturday, with Afghan voters deciding on a new president for the first democratic handover of power in the country's history since the collapse of the Taliban’s administration in 2001.
According to the Afghan Election Committee, there are about 12 million legitimate voters, 35% of them are women. The voting is expected to last until 4 p.m. local time. The final result will be announced on May 15th. If none of the candidates gets more than half of the votes, the second round of the election will be held on May 28th. If a candidate dies prior to the announcement of the final result, a new election will be organized within 30 days.
