On Wednesday, during an attack targeting rebels in Tikrit in Salahudin province, about 170 km north of Baghdad, militants shot down a military helicopter in a desert area, killing four army soldiers. A lawyer was also killed on the same day in Salahudin province in a car bomb explosion. In another attack in Samarra city, 110 km north of Baghdad, a road-side bomb exploded near a convoy belonging to the city mayor Mahmoud Khalaf, killing a girl child and injuring one of the mayor’s bodyguards.

The United Nations says almost 6,000 civilians have been killed and more than 14,000 injured in nationwide violence over the past 9 months.
