(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam is on the cusp of a major opportunity to deeply engage in the semiconductor industry and has clearly demonstrated its ambition to become a key link in the global semiconductor supply chain.

This is a shared sentiment among leading enterprises and international partners at the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 (SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024), held in Hanoi on Thursday and Friday.

"Vietnam's path forward is relatively clear;” having issued a development strategy for the semiconductor industry until 2030, with a vision to 2050;  and approved the programme on developing human resources for the semiconductor industry last September; said Mariam Sherman, World Bank’s country director for Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.

Though still in the early stages of development, Vietnam became the third-largest Asian exporter of semiconductors to the US in 2023, with revenue of 20.1 billion USD, and has emerged as a leading manufacturing hub in the region, Sherman said.

Global tech giants like Samsung, Intel, and Apple have already established significant operations in Vietnam, she said, adding that other global technology leaders such as Nvidia, Meta, and Google are accelerating their engagements, signaling the country's readiness to take its place as a high-tech hub in Asia.
“This is a critical opportunity for Vietnam to upgrade its participations in global value chain, by shifting into higher value-added manufacturing and services to promote quality job creation and fast economic growth, supporting Vietnam's aspirations to become a high-income country by 2045,” said Sherman.
Assessing Vietnam’s market prospects and investment climate, Dutch-based Sioux Technologies founder and owner, Hans Duisters said: "When I listened to the speech of the minister, and he's talking about ‘if you wanna go fast, go alone. If you wanna go far, go together.’ That's talking about an open mindset and a collaborative mindset.”
“I always see that open mindset and that touches me a lot. We've been in Vietnam for more than 10 years because Vietnam has excellent software engineers. I hope we can collaborate in high-tech supply chain of the Netherlands."
SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024, the first of its kind in Vietnam, connects Vietnamese enterprises with the global semiconductor business community and fosters broader cooperation, towards making Vietnam, with its existing potential, a key link in the global semiconductor supply chain.
