NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan made the statement at a conference entitled "The National Assembly and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" in Da Nang on Monday while stressing that the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development features 17 SDGs and 169 targets, including those on poverty reduction, health care, education and security.
"The National Assembly supervises all activities of the State in implementing the SDGs and decides on budget allocation for poverty reduction, climate change, healthcare, and science and technology. The NA has boosted the implementation of SDGs by examining and ratifying Vietnam’s participation in international conventions and treaties," Madam Ngan noted.
Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong applauded the Vietnamese NA’s efforts in achieving the SDGs, highlighting that Vietnam is the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to hold a conference on this issue. He reiterated that the IPU will assist the Vietnamese NA in fulfilling the 2030 Agenda.
The conference was co-organized by the Vietnamese NA, the IPU, and the UN Development Program.
