Vietnam votes for UN resolution calling for ending US embargo against Cuba

(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution calling on the US to end the economic, trade and financial embargo against Cuba with 184 votes in favor, 2 votes against and 3 abstentions.

Vietnam voted yes and called on the US government to reverse the current policy towards Cuba, not only for the sake of the two peoples but also for peace, stability and development in the region and the world. 

Addressing the General Assembly, Ambassador, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN Dang Dinh Quy said the economic, trade and financial embargo against Cuba goes against international law and basic principles of the UN Charter.

Vietnam joins the international community in calling on the US to end the unilateral embargo, so that Cuba can freely and fairly participate in economic and trade relations in accordance with international law, he said.

The Ambassador applauded Cuba's desire to continue dialogue and cooperation with the US on issues of mutual concern, as well as negotiate outstanding bilateral issues on the basis of equality, reciprocity, and respect for each other's national sovereignty and independence.
