(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam was chosen to host the signing of the UN Convention against cybercrime because it has been proactive in addressing cyber security challenges, according to Professor Carl Thayer of the Australian Defense Force Academy.

Vietnam currently ranks 17th out of 194 countries in cybersecurity capacity, and can play a leadership role in the field, he said.
According to Professor Thayer, cybercriminals are among the biggest threats facing nations today. Hackers can now use AI to hack systems, leading to more widespread attacks and greater economic losses. The “Hanoi Convention,” the first UN convention to tackle a transnational issue in 20 years, is a major step in addressing that challenge.
Being chosen to host the signing ceremony is proof of Vietnam’s sound multilateral diplomacy, Professor Thayer said, adding that Vietnam should seize this opportunity to strengthen international cooperation in responding to cybercrimes.
According to the UN, cybercrime costs have tripled from 3 trillion to 9 trillion USD in the past decade. This number will reach 14 trillion USD in 2026, driven by the widespread uses of information technology devices and AI.
