Vietnam celebrates the Montreal Protocol and launches the second phase of a project to reduce HCFC, September 16, 2019.

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, signed in 1987 and implemented by 196 countries, is one of the world’s most successful environmental conventions.  Vietnam has observed the agreement since 1994.

“For 25 years Vietnam has worked to preserve the ozone layer, earning international recognition. Vietnam completely eliminated its use of CFC, halon, and CTC in 2010 and ended the use of HCFC-141b in styrofoam production," The use of methyl bromide has been banned in Vietnam since 2015. As a result, we have met the requirement of cutting HCFC consumption by 10%,” said Le Cong Thanh, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment. 

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has launched the second phase of a project to reduce the basic consumption of HCFC by 35% by 2023.
