State President meets leaders of economies at APEC Leaders’ Week

(VOVWORLD) - State President Luong Cuong held separate meetings with leaders of China, the US, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Canada, and Russia, on Saturday on the sidelines of the APEC 2024 Leaders’ Week in Peru.

President Cuong told Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping that Vietnam considers developing cooperation and friendship with China a strategic choice and a top priority in its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification, and multilateralisation.

The Chinese top leader affirmed that China always considers relations with Vietnam a priority in its policy of neighborhood diplomacy, and supports Vietnam in successfully organising the 14th National Party Congress. He invited the Vietnamese President to visit China at an appropriate time.

Meeting with US President Joe Biden, President Cuong said that Vietnam regards the US as a strategically important partner. He hailed the achievements after a year of implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework between Vietnam and the US.

President Biden congratulated President Cuong on his new position, reaffirming that the US treasures the relationship between the two countries and supports a strong, independent, resilient, and prosperous Vietnam.

Meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, President Cuong said Vietnam considers Japan one of its reliable, important and long-term partners, and supports Japan's active contributions to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

PM Ishiba stressed said Vietnam is always a priority partner of Japan in the region.

President Cuong and his RoK counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol expressed their delight at the robust development of Vietnam-RoK relations, especially following the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Mr. Cuong affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to its relationship with the RoK, saying the two countries have become reliable, effective, and pragmatic partners across a wide range of areas.

President Yoon stressed that Vietnam is a key partner of the RoK in advancing the ASEAN-RoK Solidarity Initiative and the RoK’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.

In his discussion with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, President Cuong emphasized that Vietnam always values and seeks to further develop the friendship and strategic partnership with Malaysia. The Malaysian PM said Vietnam is a key partner of his country in the region. He called for both sides to strengthen their ties and elevate bilateral relations by broadening and deepening cooperation across various sectors. 

Meeting Singaporean PM Lawrence Wong, President Cuong suggested further enhancing cooperation mechanisms in politics, diplomacy, trade, defence, security, culture, education, science, technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

PM Wong praised Vietnam as a major partner of Singapore within ASEAN and agreed with the Vietnamese leader on the need to deepen collaboration in strategically important areas.

During a meeting with Australian PM Anthony Albanese, President Cuong suggested closer coordination for effective implementation of the Vietnam- Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the 2024-2027 period.

PM Albanese reaffirmed Australia’s respect for Vietnam’s role and position and invited Cuong to visit Australia at an appropriate time. 

Meanwhile, President Cuong thanked Canada for supporting Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of Typhoon Yagi at a meeting with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.

The two sides praised the robust development of Vietnam-Canada relations and emphasized their commitment to enhancing bilateral ties based on mutual respect and shared benefits.

Russian Deputy PM Alexei Overchuk told President Cuong that Russia prioritizes fostering substantive and effective ties with Vietnam, reflecting their traditional friendship and potential.

Mr. Cuong reaffirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to the comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia. The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in economy, trade, energy, science, technology, education, and tourism.
