Vietnamese representatives handed over the remains recovered by an underwater excavation team in Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa province, to US representatives including Ambassador Marc Knapper.
The remains were examined by Vietnamese forensic experts in Da Nang, who concluded that they could be related to American soldiers missing during the Vietnam War. The remains were transferred to Hawaii in the US for further verification.
MIA cooperation is a longstanding pillar of the US-Vietnam relationship. To date, the remains of more than 730 MIA US personnel have been identified.
