The event on Wednesday in Pleiku city was attended by representatives from 17 cities and provinces.

The Committee predicted climate change and extreme weather patterns will continue posing challenges to socio-economic development in Mekong Delta and Central Highlands regions. Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha urged the Committee to review its tasks, study impacts of development projects in the mainstream of the Mekong River, and take adaptive measures. He said: The Vietnam National Mekong Committee has been widened to include 5 Central Highlands provinces. Our responsibility is discussing major policy and legal issues with upstream countries. We are also in charge of implementing tasks and urgent projects affecting our localities, particularly the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands.”

Committee proposals will be submitted to the government to prepare for the 3rd Summit of the Mekong River Commission to be held in April in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
