Pauline Tamesis, who has just been appointed by the UN Secretary-General as UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, told Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Wednesday that she will make efforts to coordinate UN organizations to support Vietnam in sustainable socio-economic development, post-pandemic recovery and implementation of cooperation focuses between the two sides.
Prime Minister Chinh welcomed Ms. Tamesis on her new mission and affirmed Vietnam's foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, and strong support for multilateral cooperation and UN’s central role. He stressed the need to respect the UN Charter and international law, especially the principles of respect for independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful settlement of international disputes.
The Prime Minister thanked the UN's companionship, support and assistance for Vietnam during the past 45 years and in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. He said Vietnam has made great efforts and contributed to the UN's activities, hoping that the UN will continue to effectively support Vietnam, especially in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, post-pandemic recovery, social security assurance, and climate change response. The Government of Vietnam will continue to create the best possible conditions for the UN to effectively implement cooperation programs, PM Chinh said.
