Themed “Protecting water sources and water supply infrastructure in armed conflicts”, the debate was part of the UN’s Protection of Civilians Week 2022, which will run through this Friday.

Giang expressed Vietnam’s concern about the humanitarian impacts and difficulties caused by the destruction of water sources and water supply infrastructure in armed conflicts in many places around the world, including Africa and the Middle East.

He called on all parties concerned to improve awareness and promote the implementation of obligations under international humanitarian law and recommended that the UN Security Council work out more concrete solutions to challenges posed by water security loss.

Representatives of many countries and organizations praised UNSC Resolution 2573, calling for enhanced observance of related obligations under international humanitarian law and for the UNSC’s further engagement in this issue.
