Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 28th Diplomatic Conference in Hanoi on Monday, Tho said bilateral ties between Vietnam and China have developed rapidly this year following a telephone conversation between Vietnamese Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong and Chinese Party leader and President Xi Jingping, President Truong Tan Sang’s state visit to China, the meeting between Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and the recent visit to Vietnam by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. The two sides have reached consensus on ways to further bilateral ties sustainably. They agreed to set up three working groups in the areas of maritime, roads and finance. Ambassador Tho told VOV. “Vietnam pursues a consistent policy of respecting friendship and comprehensive cooperation with China. Vietnam is not two-faced in its relations with China. Promoting ties with China is for the benefit of the Vietnamese people and for peace and stability in the region and the world. Progress in the Vietnamese-Chinese relationship is the wish of the Vietnamese leaders and people”.

Ambassador Tho said that Vietnam and China will resolve their East Sea issues on the basis of friendly consultation in accordance with international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

According to the Ambassador, the two countries aim to raise their trade turnover to 60 billion USD by 2015. Vietnam’s import surplus remains high, however, posing a great challenge for Vietnam, especially once the Trans-Pacific Partnership is signed.
