Vietnam calls for sanctions relief, humanitarian aid during pandemic

(VOVWORLD) - Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said Wednesday that COVID-19 is threatening the peace process and humanitarian work in conflicted areas around the world.

Addressing the UN Security Council’s online debate on the pandemic’s challenge to peace, Mr. Minh highlighted the need for comprehensive solutions, stating that Vietnam welcomes the UNSC’s Resolution 2532 on the COVID-19 response and support for the UN Secretary-General’s call for a global ceasefire.

Deputy Prime Minister Minh called for sanctions to be lifted and favorable conditions to be created for humanitarian aid in the context of the pandemic.

He promoted the role of regional organizations in fighting COVID-19, noting that Vietnam and other ASEAN members have mobilized community efforts to protect public health, the economy, and regional peace and security.

He affirmed Vietnam’s commitment and called for greater international cooperation and solidarity to defeat the pandemic.
