Mr. Minh urged both sides to accelerate the signing of the framework agreement on economic, cultural, education, information technology cooperation; the investment encouragement and protection agreement; and the double taxation avoidance agreement. He promised Botswana further support when Vietnam assumes the role of non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and establishes a formal relationship with the African Union. Ms. Dow urged Vietnam to enhance coordination with Botswana in agriculture, information technology, education, training, tourism, and health care.

The two agreed on the importance of peace, stability, security, maritime safety, and freedom in line with international law, and signed a visa exemption agreement for diplomatic and official passport holders.

The same day, a ceremony was held in Hanoi to mark the 10th anniversary of Vietnam-Botswana diplomatic relations. Deputy Foreign Minister Tran Quoc Cuong said Vietnam greatly values Botswana’s role in the Southern African Development Community. He said he believes that after Dow’s visit, more effective cooperation programmes will be implemented. Vietnam is eager to work with the government and people of Botswana to make Botswana a developed country, he said, adding that the relationship between Vietnam and African countries like Botswana, will continue to grow.
