(VOVWORLD) - Longstanding ties between Vietnam and Angola provide a solid base for a new phase of cooperation, State President Luong Cuong said Thursday during talks with his Angolan counterpart João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço in Luanda.

President Cuong said there is ample room to strengthen ties and proposed building a development partnership that could serve as a model for South–South cooperation.

He called on Angolan agencies to support Vietnamese projects in metallurgy and mineral exploitation and processing, and urged both sides to work harder to raise bilateral trade to 1 billion USD.

“Based on our countries’ potential and strengths, we will create better conditions for key products to enter each other’s markets. We also agreed to share investment opportunities and support businesses in priority areas such as agriculture, oil, gas, energy, and IT. Beyond traditional areas like healthcare, education and agriculture, we will expand cooperation in defense, information technology, science, technology, digital transformation, and green transformation,” Mr. Cuong told reporters after the talks.

President Cuong asked Angola to support Vietnam’s engagement with the African Union and to back its bids for seats in international organizations.

President Lourenço praised Vietnam’s capabilities and asked for support in developing Angola’s agriculture, particularly rice and fruit production. He expressed his hope that more Vietnamese goods will reach the Angolan market.
