He said that to promote substantive cooperation in the Mekong River basin, Vietnam has made strong political commitments and has joined other MRC members in negotiating important documents like the 1995 Mekong Agreement, the rules for water utilization, and reforming the commission and its Secretariat.
Vietnam hosted the second MRC Summit in Ho Chi Minh City in 2014, Hung said. He added Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s attendance at the 4th MRC Summit affirms Vietnam's role and responsibility in the implementation of the 1995 Mekong Agreement, and promotes the basin’s sustainable development.
The MRC is a cooperation mechanism between Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, China and Myanmar which was established in 1995 to promote cooperation to protect shared interests in the sub-region.
