US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said the countries affected would be primarily in Africa and the Caribbean. These regions generally have low levels of trade with the US and would not significantly contribute to reducing America’s overall trade deficit, Lutnick said.
President Trump earlier sent notices to 25 countries announcing new tariff rates that will take effect on August 1, unless they reach an agreements with the US before then.
On Tuesday, he announced that the US has reached a trade agreement with Indonesia, under which the US will reduce the tariff on Indonesia’s exports from 32% to 19% and, in return, Indonesia will not charge any tariffs on American goods and will grant the US full access to its market.
In addition, Indonesia had agreed to purchase 15 billion USD worth of US energy, 4.5 billion USD in agricultural products, and 50 Boeing jets, many of them the 777 model.
