US Senate releases 118 billion USD security bill

(VOVWORLD) - US Senators on Sunday unveiled a bipartisan funding bill worth 118 billion USD which includes aid for Ukraine, Israel, and the southern US border.

The long-awaited bill earmarks 60 billion USD in military assistance for Ukraine, and 14.1 billion USD for Israel, the US Central Command, operations in the Red Sea, and partners in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as 10 billion USD in humanitarian assistance for civillians in Gaza, the West Bank, and Ukraine.

Last October, President Joe Biden asked the US Congress to approve additional funding for Ukraine and Israel, but House Republicans insisted on stronger border security to deal with a wave of illegal immigrants in exchange for accepting President Biden's proposal.

It is not clear that the 370-page bill has the 60 backers it will need to advance from the first procedural vote in the 100-seat, Democratic-controlled Senate, expected on Wednesday at the latest. The bill faces opposition from Donald Trump and Republican hardliners.
