The sanctions were imposed in response to Russia’s interference in the US election last year, for supplying weapons to the Syrian government, and for conducting malicious cyber attacks. The sanctions target Russia's mining, metal, shipping and railway sectors.
A number of investigations have been opened to identify possible collusion between the Russian government and Trump’s Presidential campaign to help Trump win the election. Moscow has denied any accusation.
