“The plan focuses on giving both sides security guarantees to secure a lasting peace,” the official said. “It includes things Ukraine wants and needs to have a durable peace.”
Axios News previously reported that the US and Russia were secretly formulating the new plan, citing US and Russian officials. The proposal includes "peace in Ukraine, security guarantees, security in Europe, and future US relations with Russia and Ukraine," Axios reported.
Washington reportedly has proposed that Russian be recognized as an official state language in Ukraine and that official status be granted to the Russian Orthodox Church.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russian and US leaders discussed a peace plan for Ukraine during their high-profile August summit in Alaska, but said there have been “no new developments to report so far.”
