A White House spokesperson said that the US's policies call for an approach that will explore diplomacy with North Korea to make practical progress.

North Korea said it successfully test-fired a missile over the weekend that can hit targets 1,500 km away.

Washington will engage in bilateral cooperation and diplomacy with Pyongyang in order to make "practical progress" to ensure the security of the US and its allies and partners, the White House's principal deputy press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, said.

On Tuesday, special nuclear envoys from Japan, South Korea, and the US met in Tokyo to discuss ways to resume talks with North Korea.
