(VOVworld) - US-led coalition forces have parachuted ammunition to rebels fighting Islamic State (ISIS) militants in northern Syria, a military spokesman said Monday. Colonel Steve Warren, the spokesman for the US-led effort to strike IS in Iraq and Syria, said the ammunition had gone to a group called the Syrian Arab Coalition (SAC) that has been fighting IS for months across an arc of territory north of the IS stronghold of Raqqa.

He added that the US and its allies could eventually strike IS targets identified by SAC fighters on the ground. He said SAC fears being struck by Russian airstrikes against IS.

At a meeting Monday in Luxembourg, EU foreign ministers called for a political transition to end a 4-year-old crisis in Syria. The foreign ministers called for an immediate cessation of Russian attacks against IS in Syria, saying Russia’s air strikes could target moderate opposition groups in Syria. They also urged Russia not to violate the airspace of Syria’s neighbors.
