In a press statement, the US Department of State said the vast majority of Libyans want to choose their leadership through peaceful elections.

The US called on all parties to put down their arms and urged Libya’s leaders to commit to confirming a constitutional basis for presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to the State Department, the ongoing instability is a reminder of the urgent need to appoint a new UN special representative for Libya to resume mediation efforts with unified support from the international community.

The US will amplify its call for calm and re-commitment to elections at the August 30 UN Security Council briefing on Libya.
