The vote was 4-9 with two abstentions, meaning the series of UN sanctions will take effect Saturday, at 1 AM (GMT).
The reinstatement of sanctions will once again freeze Iranian assets abroad, halt arms deals with Tehran, and penalize any development of Iran’s ballistic missile program, further squeezing the country’s reeling economy.
The proposal from Russia and China was intended to give diplomacy more time. However, the E3, which consists of Britain, Germany, and France, argued that Iran has failed to meet its 2015 nuclear pact commitments and that weeks of negotiations have produced no concrete results.
The move is expected to heighten already magnified tensions between Iran and the West.
