According to a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the call, which involved Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, the foreign ministers of the E3, and EU representatives, focused on proposals to keep diplomatic channels open and prevent further escalation.
Araghchi reiterated Iran’s commitment to a diplomatic solution and rejected the E3’s move to trigger the “snapback mechanism”, calling it “legally baseless and illogical.” The snapback mechanism allows the reinstatement of all international sanctions previously lifted under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 group (the UK, France, Germany, the US, and Russia, plus China). Last month the European powers triggered a 30-day deadline for Iran to negotiate to avoid the snapback.
During the call, Araghchi underscored Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, including a framework agreement on fulfilling safeguard obligations following attacks on its nuclear facilities in June.
