AFISMA was founded in January to help Mali-based French troop prevent the rise of Islamist insurgents and help the government regain power across Mali. MINUSMA is tasked with training local soldiers, bringing stability to key towns in the country’s north, promoting democracy, and supporting the government to broaden control at localities. Additionally, MINUSMA plays a key role in political efforts to rebuild Mali. The force is expected to operate for 12 months.
