Speaking at the session on water of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the UNGA President underscored the need for inclusive and comprehensive transboundary agreements, based on the United Nations Water Convention, to support countries in all regions.

He said that the world needs to reform its institutional architecture and form a Council of UN agencies led by a UN water envoy, supported by a reformed UN Water Agency and a scientific practices panel.

At the meeting, the UN Economic and Social Council said that the world must speed up its work to finish the goals of clean water coverage globally by 2030. 107 countries need to urgently accelerate their participation to achieve the 6th Sustainable Development Goal to meet basic water needs.
