The current economic situation inside of Syria is even worse than it was at the height of the conflict, said Pedersen during a press conference in Damascus, adding that the UN can’t accept that funding for Syria is going down while the humanitarian need is increasing.
The UN estimates that 90% of Syrians in government-held areas live in poverty and that over half the country’s population struggles to put food on the table.
