The piloted areas span 250 hectares specializing in high quality rice cultivation, low emissions, and continuous production in three crops: summer-autumn, autumn-winter and winter-spring.

The five localities selected for the project are Can Tho city and Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Dong Thap, and Tra Vinh province. The model is implemented from farming to measuring emissions, starting with this year's summer-autumn crop.

According to the Ministry, this project can fundamentally transform Mekong Delta rice production and has gained the support of farmers and international organizations. The World Bank has identified this project as a key project in the Asia-Pacific region to be expanded to other Asian countries. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam said: “This is considered a pilot model for sustainable production, emission reduction, and improving the capacity of cooperatives. The official results for the emission reduction coefficient will be announced after three crops.”
