(VOVWORLD) -The United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy to Sudan Ramtane Lamamra, on Sunday, expressed optimism about the possibility of achieving peace and stability and ending the conflict in Sudan.

Lamamra made the remarks while meeting with Abdel Fattah Al‑Burhan, the chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council and general commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), in Port Sudan. Lamamra said he held consultations during his visit to Sudan with a number of officials and representatives of civil society, vowing to work with all parties to affirm the UN’s commitments.

Al‑Burhan briefed the UN envoy about ongoing efforts to seek a peaceful solution, stressing the Sudan government’s commitment to democratic transformation and a transitional period that ends with general elections.

Sudan has been witnessing deadly clashes between the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 15, 2023. More than 7.3 million people have been displaced both inside and outside Sudan since the conflict broke out. More than 12,000 people have been killed in fighting, according to the latest update by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
