UN chief concludes his Vietnam visit

(VOVWORLD) -United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres left Hanoi on Sunday, concluding his two-day official visit to Vietnam.

During his stay, the UN Secretary-General laid a wreath at and visited Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, paid a courtesy visit to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, held talks with President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue. He also co-chaired a ceremony to mark the 45th anniversary of Vietnam’s membership of the UN.

At their meetings with the UN Secretary-General, the Vietnamese leaders praised Guterres’s visit; thanked the United Nations for its support for Vietnam in every stage of development, especially during the difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the UN support helped Vietnam to quickly subside the disease.

The UN chief applauded Vietnam's role and voice in the international arena and affirmed UN full support for the main pillars of Vietnam's development path.

During the visit, UN Secretary-General Guterres and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son co-chaired a talk at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam about innovation and the participation of the youth for a sustainable and exclusive future. The event was attended by 400 young leaders, Vietnamese youth from Government agencies, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, political and social organizations, NGOs operating in the field of youth and sustainable development, and climate change, forces participating in United Nations Peacekeeping mission and students from some universities in Hanoi.

During the visit, the UN chief visited the Green One United Nations Building and visited famous and iconic cultural and historical monuments of Hanoi capital such as Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam (The Temple of Literature), the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long and Ngoc Son temple.

The visit by Guterres is a success as it strengthens the relations between the UN and Vietnam and helps promote peace, sustainable development, climate change adaptation and human rights in the world.
