Receiving UN Secretary-General Antonió Guterres in Hanoi on Friday, Party leader  Trong applauded Guterres’s visit, especially on the 45th anniversary of Vietnam’s UN membership.

Vietnam consistently implements the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, diversification and multilateralization of foreign relations, and is an active and responsible member of the international community, he said.

The UN chief expressed his pleasure to visit Vietnam, a country he has admired, and praised Vietnam's commitments to and support for multilateralism and the UN Charter. Vietnam has always voiced its principled stance on issues of peacekeeping and sustainable development, upheld the UN Charter and international law, and actively cooperated with the UN and international partners to deal with non-traditional security issues, he said.

The Secretary-General especially emphasized and expected that Vietnam would play a more active role, promote its successes in inclusive development, and adopt policies and measures to continue to play its leadership role in climate change response. The United Nations will continue to cooperate actively and closely with Vietnam, said Guterres.

On Friday evening at the International Convention Center, Hanoi, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Antonió Guterres co-chaired the 45th anniversary celebration of Vietnam joining the UN.
