(VOVWORLD) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for international support for Lebanon after last week's horrific explosion that destroyed the port of Beirut and part of the capital city.

At an online UN briefing on the humanitarian situation in Lebanon on Monday, Guterres called for robust international support for the people in need in Lebanon, especially women and children who are the most vulnerable in times of crisis. Guterres also called for an investigation and for reforms in Lebanon.

He said the UN will stand with Lebanon to alleviate its immediate suffering and support its recovery, calling this a moment for solidarity and time to change things for the better.

World leaders on Monday pledged 300 million USD for Lebanon, according to conference host France, with the emergency aid to be delivered "directly" to a population reeling from the deadly port blast.
