(VOVWORLD) - US President Donald Trump said Monday that he will sign an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States, to protect the jobs of American citizens amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump offered no details as to what immigration programs might be affected by the order.Trump has taken credit for his restrictions on travel to the US from Europe, China, Canada, Mexico, Iran, and South Korea, arguing it contributed to slowing the spread of the virus in the US. But he has yet to extend those restrictions to other nations now experiencing virus outbreaks.

Trump, during his term, has been pushing for immigration restrictions to the US. He has sought to ramp up the construction of the southern border wall with Mexico and implement policies that restrict migrants seeking asylum in the US.
