On Wednesday, northern Vietnam is forecast to see scattered showers and thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall ranging from 15–30mm, and in some places exceeding 80mm. Thunderstorms may be accompanied by whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong gusts.

From Thursday to Friday, widespread heavy rain is expected across northern Vietnam, as well as central Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces, with rainfall generally between 60–120mm, and locally over 200mm.

Heavy downpours could result in flooding in low-lying and urban areas, flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep terrain. These hazards may cause significant environmental damage, pose threats to human life, disrupt traffic, hinder transport, and damage infrastructure and economic assets.

In Nghe An province, upstream floodwaters caused landslides in mountainous communes such as Muong Xen, Nhon Mai, and Muong Quang, submerging residential areas. Major roads were deeply flooded, endangering both people and vehicles. Notably, riverside communities face a high risk of landslides. Local authorities are mobilizing all available resources to help evacuate residents to safer areas.

Mr. Le Hong Thai, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Nhon Mai commune, said: “The commune’s natural disaster response committee has directed all local forces to coordinate with the Border Guard, police, and military. We have relocated 19 households from Xoi Voi hamlet to the community cultural house for temporary shelter.”

In Phu Tho province, local authorities have evacuated 343 households living in areas at high risk of landslides and flash floods.
