(VOVworld) – The Vietnamese community in Thailand on Friday issued a statement opposing China’s illegal placement of its oil rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

The statement read: “As a social organization, the Vietnamese community in Thailand strongly opposes and requests China to halt all its illegal acts, withdraw the Haiyang-981 oil drilling rig together with military ships and escort planes, from Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, and not to let similar activities occur in future. The Vietnamese community in Thailand asks China to strictly follow international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, implement commitments stated in the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea between China and ASEAN countries, as well as agreements reached between Chinese and Vietnamese leaders.”
