Tensions rise as Lula blasts US over visa sanctions tied to Bolsonaro trial

(VOVWORLD) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Saturday criticised the United States for imposing visa sanctions on eight out of 11 Brazilian Supreme Court judges.

Tensions escalated after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Friday that Washington was revoking a US visa for Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes for his “political witch hunt” against former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro is on trial before Brazil's Supreme Court on charges of plotting a coup to stop President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office in January 2023. The impeachment trial is scheduled to take place this September.

US President Donald Trump earlier threatened Brazil with a crippling tariff of 50% starting August 1 over charges against Bolsonaro.
