The Vietnamese underdogs played confidently with Nguyen Quoc Viet’s early goal in the 6th minute. Surprised by the goal, Australia turned to attack and possessed the ball more than 60% in the first half. But the opportunities they created were inaccurate and countered by the Vietnam defense.
Defensively, Vietnam preserved the score and won their first three points against strong Australian opponents.
U20 Vietnam's next opponents will be U20 Qatar. The match will take place on Saturday evening. Vietnam will play Iran on Tuesday.
Vietnam are in Group B alongside Iran, Australia, and Qatar in the tournament's finals.
Sixteen squads are competing in the tournament, namely Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Japan, Jordan, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Oman, Tajikistan, Iran, Australia, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, China, Iraq, and Syria.
