President al-Sharaa is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House, marking the first visit by a Syrian President to the US since Syria gained independence in 1946.
Before the visit, the US Department of State said that it had removed Ahmed al-Sharaa’s name from the terrorist list and is taking steps to lift sanctions on Syrian officials.
This move is part of Washington’s efforts to rebuild relations with Syria following the overthrow of al-Sharaa’s government late last year. The US is reportedly seeking to establish a military presence in Syria’s capital, Damascus, with related negotiations expected to conclude by the end of this year.
