Syrian rebels said on Monday they fired mortar shells at the presidential palace, the Damascus International Airport, and security buildings to mark the second anniversary of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said several rockets fell in districts near the presidential palace. Meanwhile, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said five mortar shells struck bombs have hit Damascus Airport, killing 2 people and wounding many others. The attack occurred several hours after the summit of the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces elected Ghassan Hitto head of the Provisional Government of the Syrian Opposition. However, the main Syrian opposition has rejected this Provisional Government and considers it an obstacle to resolving the Syrian crisis. The same day, a Lebanese military official said this is the first time Syrian jet fighters have released bombs on the border with Lebanon.
