(VOVworld) – On Tuesday, Syrian troops and Kurdish fighters ousted the Islamic State (IS) from the city of Hasakeh in northeast Syria, more than a month after the jihadists took control of this area.
Director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Rami Abdel Rahman said the Syrian army pushed IS out of Zuhur, the last district it controlled in Hasakeh city, and that IS has retreated to the city’s southern suburbs.
At least 287 IS fighters were killed in Hasakeh, either in clashes with troops and the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) or in air strikes by a US-led coalition. 120 Syrian army soldiers and dozens of Kurdish fighters were also killed during the prolonged fighting.
