The award, named after Russian female mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya, has been presented annually since 1985 to honor female scientists with major achievements in scientific research and application.

Addressing the award ceremony held as part of a meeting with female leaders at centrally-run agencies on the occasion of International Women's Day (March 8), Prime Minister Chinh urged relevant agencies to effectively implement the national target program on gender equality until 2030 and pay greater attention to the promotion of qualified women to leadership positions at all levels.

“I believe that benevolence, resourcefulness, wisdom, and devotion are part and parcel of each Vietnamese woman. These eternal qualities and values will continue to contribute to the happiness of every family and to building a powerful and wealthy nation,” he said.

Women account for 30.3% of Vietnam's National Assembly deputies, ranking 64th globally, fourth in Asia and first in ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). Key leadership positions held by women in ministries, ministry-level and Government agencies make up a half, nearing the target set for 2025, according PM Chinh.
