(VOVworld) – A court in Chechnya has sentenced two Ukraine citizens, Mykola Karpyuk and Stanislav Cliché, to 22 and a half and 20 years imprisonment respectively for participation in combat actions in the Republic in the 90s.

A spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, Vladimir Markin, said the two Ukrainian citizens had joined separatists and guerrillas in Russia and Chechnya fought against Russia’s military force from December, 1994 to January, 1995, killing at least 13 Russians and injuring 13 others. Earlier, another member of the group alongside the two citizens was sentenced 24 years and a half in prison.
After the ruling by the Chechnya’s court, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko promised that he would do his best to liberate the two Ukrainians. Mr. Poroshenko was speaking at a meeting with lawyers for the Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko, who has been released by Moscow in exchange for prisoners with Kiev.
