Russia ready to act as mediator in ensuring security in Africa

(VOVWORLD) - Russia is ready to play a role in ensuring security in Africa amid the complicated developments in security there, Viktor Bondarev, Chairman of the Committee on Defence and Security of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation said on Sunday.

On the same day, Russian Ambassador to the Central African Republic, Alexander Bikantov, said that the country had asked Russia to help ensure security during the constitutional referendum.

At the 2nd Russia-Africa Summit in Saint Petersburg at the end of last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is ready to help African partners strengthen the national sovereignty.

Russia's moves take place in the context of the situation in many African countries which are witnessing complicated security developments relating to civil war and terrorism.  Russia increasingly wants to enhance its role and influence in this region.
